The CAN Project

CRIS was the lead delivery agent of the CAN (Carrickfergus, Antrim and Newtownabbey) PEACE III Schools Project: “We CAN Make a Difference”. This project operated at three levels across the NEELB area engaging a broad spectrum of children, parents and school staff in a range of cross community Good Relations, Arts, Music and Drama Programmes. The core purpose of the project was to create a stronger sense of community cohesion in each cluster area. Through CAN, children participated in numerous cross community relationship building events and trips; curriculum linked Good Relations programmes such as Global Village and Knowing Me, Knowing You; mixed ability drama projects with pupils form mainstream and special sectors rehearsing and performing together to name but a few.

The CAN project enabled the engagement of parents at a whole school level, involving them in the pupil programmes whilst providing specific and similar experiences through tailored Community Relations programmes. This process ensured that the objectives of the project were not just felt within the schools but also in the homes and wider community. This project was driven by CRIS’ unique “Whole School Community” ethos and approach Corrymeela’s highly accessible and well resourced school programmes. This was strengthened further by provision of experiential and accredited training for school staff which enabled the continued development and delivery of Community Relations whilst strengthening partnerships between schools.

This project was delivered in partnership with The Corrymeela Community under the direction of The CAN Peace III Partnership and NEELB.
